Happy Birthday Molly!

Our little Molly just turned 4 years old! I can't believe it!! And honestly, she has thrown my "I hate 3 year olds" theory out of the water because she has been increasingly more difficult as the 4 year old days go by. BUT.... she had a marvelous birthday weekend. She and I had a lot of fun together. After it was all said and done I am so glad that I took so much time to be with her because next year, she will most likely begin Jr. Kindergarten and I won't be able to spend the entire day with her like that for awhile. She told me she wanted to have a surprise party just like we had for Clarissa. She even told me that we needed to hide behind the couch and jump out to yell surprise. And that was exactly what we did for her. But the surprise would be when we do the surprise....

Friday, November 5
Molly and I went to a nearby shopping center. (A reference for some of you: It's set up like Easton or Sandhills) We enjoyed an ice cream cone. Then we went shopping for new clothes. She loved picking out what she liked and trying them on. There were fun rides along the walk and of course we stopped to ride a couple. But her favorite was definitely the trolley ride. She had been begging to ride the trolley for months so it was the perfect time to take her on a ride. After a quick lunch at McDonalds we picked up the ice cream cake she had chosen. Later than night we were at the school for their movie night watching Toy Story 3, one of her current favorites.

Saturday, November 6
The birthday fun continued when Daddy took her out for yet another ice cream cone : ) Meanwhile back at home Clarissa and I decorated the house. We waited for a friend we met from the school to come over and the neighbors also came over. We hid behind the couch and yelled surprise when she came home. She was very happy to have some playmates over and loved sharing her new toys with them. She is absolutely one of the very best gift receivers I have ever seen. I love watching and listening to her open presents!

Sunday, November 7
The fun didn't stop here. (She had reminded me that Clarissa technically had two birthdays. One surprise party in Columbia and then another special day on the actual birthdate in Hawaii.) And so she also wanted to have two birthdays : ) I fixed up her hair in a tiara and she put on one of the new dresses she picked up from Friday's shopping trip. The primary sang happy birthday to her and she was able to pick out a special candy treat from the presidency. She loved the special attention!

She is such a sweet little demon...I mean girl! We love her so much and have enjoyed watching her grow and learn. Our family just wouldn't be the same without her. It was a great weekend!

Dreadful Pumpkin Experience

Lessons I learned when in Hawaii: Everything takes twice as long than what we are used to because of the enormous number of people in such a tiny little space. Therefore plan ahead so you don't have to do things on the Sabbath. And, carved pumpkins don't even last one day around here. There is a pumpkin patch that is close to where we live but it is only open to the public for two weekends. I decided on the first weekend because I knew we would busy during Halloween weekend. The original plan was to go to the temple open house and then to the Haunted Lagoon ride at the Polynesian Cultural Center. They are right next to each other. Only it was going to be way too expensive. So I thought, hey! Let's go to the pumpkin patch instead. It will be much cheaper and the kids can pick out what they want to carve this year. When I saw how long the line was just to get the car to the parking lot and realized that we wouldn't be able to make it time for the open house Todd and I decided to just come back the next day, Sunday. So after church, I have the kids change their clothes and we go to the patch. We took the hay ride and walked through pumpkins to pick out the most perfect one for carving. We were enjoying the open space, the fresh air, our time together, and we checked out. As we were walking back to the car, I couldn't find the keys. Yep! They fell out of my possession, most likely during the hayride. Our neighbor came to rescue us. We got Todd's spare key from the house and then drove back to get the van. That week I had to pay to replace the key, which meant they had to reprogram it. It was so expensive that I was left thinking we could have gone to the Polynesian Center to ride the haunted lagoon with the cost of this new key! When you know better than to do something, then just do the right thing.
The week of Halloween we carved our pumpkins for Family Home Evening. It was a lot of fun. Especially for Molly who decided to just sit and eat a cupcake instead :) I put it out front being so proud of the work the kids had accomplished. Come Halloween night they were so rotten and shriveled that no one could really tell what the design was suppose to be. We'll know next year to either store it in the refrigerator or simply wait to carve on Halloween day.

Laie Temple Open House

It was such a thrill for me to be able to take the kids into one of our temples! I don't know if we'll be able to have another opportunity like this again. The temple here has been closed down for a year now to remodel and update construction. They opened it up to the public to come visit the inside. Clarissa loved the bridal room. There were beautiful jewels outlining the mirrors, gorgeous chandeliers and intricate details on the carpet. I wasn't surprised at all that she loved it and wants to go there when she gets married. Adam really liked the celestial room. He said he could understand why it would be so peaceful there. I have often shared that I like to just sit in there and just think and pray. It's very relaxing and inspiring. Molly enjoyed the baptismal font because of the oxen statues around the botoom. Also not a surprise since she loves animals so much : ) It was so wonderful to share this part of my life with them. I was going every month in South Carolina and now they are able to make a realy connection to what I am doing whenever I say I am going to the temple. The rededication is tomorrow morning. Adam and I are able to go but the girls will need to stay home with Todd. I gave him the choice to stay home or go with me and I have to admit, I'm so glad that he decided to come along.

Hanauma Bay

Todd really loves to snorkel. We decided to go to Hanauma Bay one Saturday to get some swim time in before it gets too cool. Adam had a huge scab from a riding injury so he complained the whole drive there. But after about 30 minutes of being on the beach he decided to give it a try and absolutely loved it. The girls and I stayed on the beach. I tried to do some reading but Molly kept drifting away too far so I found myself fetching before she became lost among the sea turtles. It was a windy day but still warm enough to enjoy. (I'll admit that I'm not much of a beach person. It's just too messy for me.) But I loved hanging out as a family. I loved the view and it felt good to relax.

New Neighbors

We were feeling a little bit of gloom and doom, thinking that we weren't going to be able to connect with many people here. The sisters I have common interests with either are really, really busy or have children much younger than mine. And then something miraculous happened. I naval family moved in next door. Not only that but they have a 10 year son and a 7 year old daughter. Molly doesn't mind that she has to play with the big girls : ) It has been a wonderful motivator. Get your homework done quickly so you can play with the neighbors. Practice your piano properly and you can go play next door. You better watch your tone of voice with me if you want to play with the neighbors. It works like a charm. I'm happy that they have someone to hang out with and relate to in regards of moving around a lot. (I don't really have photos of the boys since they play video games a lot. I just don't think about taking a picture when they are glued to a television screen.)

Waikele Warrior Fun

I am trying really hard to stay positive about being in Waipahu and having the kids attend the school nearby. But I'll admit that I am finding it more and more difficult to mantain my cheerful disposition. Adam has found himself victimized by racism. He's already nervous about middle school because there is a group that will seek out and harm white kids. (We've reassured him that we won't allow him to go to such a school.) We also feel that the standards here are quite inferior to what we are used to. I don't understand their assesment method at all and doubt that they are truly being taught the essentials they need to succeed when we get back to the mainland. To make it worse Adam isn't keeping up with the work. His lack of motivation is hurting him in more ways than one and of course he doesn't want to listen to the advice his mom gives him. It can be very stressful if I think about it for too long. And so I try to look at the positive aspects of the school. There have been some really great community building fundraisers that we have all enjoyed. They kids participated in a Hurricane Run on the campus square. They were given 10-15 minutes to see how many laps they could run. Clarissa ran 7 laps and Adam ran 12. Even Molly got into the fun. There have been two family movie nights where they set up a projector on the square and we sat out with our lawn chairs and enjoyed a movie. They've shown Marmaduke and Toy Story 3. As part of the fundraiser they serve food and drinks to complete the experience : ) And just this past Friday we went to the Waikele Extravaganza carnival. There were several games with fun prizes, a bouncy house, more food and drinks, silent auction and rummage sale...the whole works. The kids had a lot of fun and I enjoyed watching them interact with some of the other kids they know. If I can just focus on the good things, right? That and knowing that Adam will most likely be participating in another schooling option next year because he can't afford to be lost when he gets back home.

Hawaiian Excursions

For some reason we tend to take things slow and easy. We knew we wanted to go out and see something pretty but wasn't sure what to do. And then I decided I wanted to have some yummy pineapple treats that are served at the Dole Plantation. We made our way there. I forced the kids to pose for a token photo and when we got into the cafeteria area saw that they had changed their menu completely from seven years ago! Before it only served tasty desserts but now they have a full dining menu with only a couple of dessert items. I was severaly disappointed....I blame the tourists! I had some cake and ice cream though and knew that it would be just one of many little excursions we will be taking during the next three years.
